Measuring Machines
A series of machines measures the
geometries of medical parts including
stents, implant screws, syringes and
needles, and prosthetic joints. The
VideoCheck machines provide high-resolution and full automatic optical
measurements for determining 2-D
and 3-D geometries. The machine integrates the Foucault laser probe, a fiber
probe for micropart features, a contour
probe for surface finish, and Win Werth
software. Two styles are available with
a rigid-column or a fixed-bridge design.
The measuring range is 250–3500 mm
in x, 125–1750 mm in y, and 200–600
mm in z. Werth Inc., Old Saybrook,
CT, 860/399-2445.

Micromanufacturing
Services
Micromanufacturing is suitable for
components and subassemblies used in
minimally invasive device manufacturing. A company offers precision computer numerical control machine shop
services for prototyping and short pre-production quantities. The service
complements low- to mid-volume micromolding, microinsert molding, and
assembly. Other capabilities include
producing solutions to reduce or eliminate expensive machined components
such as stainless steel, ceramic, glass, or
plastic; manufacturing under a microscope; and secondary assembly operations such as gluing or welding. Design
and engineering services, a pellet-to-package closed-loop molding system,
and a Class 100,000 cleanroom are
also available. Mikrotech, Kenosha,
WI, 262/857-2244.

Medical Membranes
Medical membranes can equalize
pressure in medical devices while providing a contamination barrier. Typical applications of the product include
hemodialysis transducer protectors,
surgical suction filters, IV infusion
filters, and urine collection samples.
The medical membranes incorporate
proprietary expanded PTFE technology that facilitates easy integration into
a variety of device designs and housing materials. They are suited for use
with EtO, steam, gamma, and E-beam
sterilization. The manufacturing of the
membranes meets ISO 9001 and ISO
14001 standards. W. L. Gore and Associates Inc., Newark, DE, 800/455-

Virtual Design Software
Rubber and plastic molded components can be designed, tested, and refined using computerized simulation.
The software goes beyond traditional
finite-element analysis and allows the
MOTORS
Stepper Drive
and Motor Unit
To save space, wiring, and costs,
a company has introduced a stepper drive and motor unit fused into
one device. The STM units come
standard with protection against
over- and undervoltage, overtemper-ature, motor shorts, and motor open
phase. Features include advanced
current control, antiresonance technology, torque ripple smoothing,
and microstep emulation. The unit
is available in lengths of 92. 4 mm
with an output torque of up to 125
oz-in., or 114.4 mm with an output
torque of 245 oz-in. The S version
can be configured from a drop-down
menu, and the user can create a cus-
company to partner with customers
throughout the process of designing
and manufacturing a complex product. Advantages include more control
of design outcomes, improved time to
market, and efficient manufacturing.

High-Barrier Film
A high-barrier film product line can
be used to package combination products that require no interaction between
the drug, device, and packaging material. The PerfecPharm Grades 35677-E,
35682-G, and 35689-F use aluminum
foil and a polyethylene terephthalate
sealant that is designed to have low interaction with excipients. Grade 35691
is a clear film with high oxygen and
moisture barrier properties, and Grade
35435-F uses a Barex sealant.
